Sharath Ananthamurthy, Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, said that the denial of an opportunity for a visionary leader, Babu Jagjivan Ram, to rule the country as Prime Minister was a historic blunder.

He was speaking at the programme organised to mark Babu Jagjivan Ram’s 118th birth anniversary at Kuvempu University on Saturday.

Mr. Babu Jagjivan Ram was one of the greatest leaders of post-Independent India. He handled many important portfolios, including defence, labour, and agriculture, and also worked as Deputy Prime Minister. However, he did not get an opportunity to rule the country as Prime Minister for political reasons.

“However, missing that opportunity did not belittle his stature,” Prof. Sharath Ananthamurthy said.

Heading the important ministries, Mr. Babu Jagjivan Ram took decisions that had an everlasting impact on the country. “His role in the creation of Bangladesh was significant. Under his leadership, the country witnessed a green revolution,” he said.

The programme was organised by the university’s Babu Jagjivan Ram Study Centre.

Registrar A.L. Manjunath, the centre’s convener Yadav Bodke, education Dean Jagannath Dange, teaching faculty Nellikatte Siddesh, Niranjan, public relations officer Sathyaprakash, and others were present.
