School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Saturday welcomed the Social Democratic Party of India’s (SDPI) decision to withdraw from the AIADMK-BJP alliance stating that it reflects growing trust among minority communities in the DMK’s leadership.

He was inaugurating additional summer art training huts at the “Ponni Chithirai Kadal” centre in Nagapattinam, set up under the District Education and Empowerment Programme.

“Muslims who had supported the AIADMK for over five decades are now gradually moving away from the party,” said Mr. Mahesh.

He criticised the Union government for passing the Waqf (Amendment) Act “in the middle of the night,” drawing a parallel with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which he said played a role in the BJP’s performance in the 2021 elections. “The Waqf (Amendment) Act will similarly reflect in upcoming electoral outcome,” he added.

Responding to a question on water scarcity in rural areas of the district, Mr. Mahesh said steps were being taken to address drinking water shortage during the summer in Nagapattinam.
