A Class one student of Government Primary School in Konalam village near Arakkonam town in Ranipet drowned in a pond near the school campus on Thursday after he slipped and fell into the water body while he was playing on the bund.

Police said the deceased has been identified as T. Kamesh (6), son of the couple K. Tirupathi and T. Latha. They were agricultural workers in the village. Initial inquiry revealed that the couple was busy with household work when their son went to the pond before going to school where he was said to be playing on the bund of the waterbody.

After sometime, parents searched for their son to drop him in the school but they were not able to find him. They went to the school but school authorities said that he did not come to campus so far.

Along with relatives and neighbours, they searched for their son in the village and found his school bag on the bund of the pond. Based on alert, firefighters and Arakkonam Taluk police rushed to the spot and retrieved the body of the student. A case was registered. A probe is underway.

Residents said that the pond is located near the school campus, making it risky for school students. They want the district administration to take safety measures including fencing of the pond to prevent such incidents in future.
