A Cabinet sub-committee meeting, chaired by Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, reviewed the monsoon preparedness on Thursday in the light of more than average rains being expected in several districts of Karnataka this year.
Officials said districts, including those in north Karnataka, witnessed good pre-monsoon showers and more than average rainfall was anticipated from July to September across Karnataka, spurring agriculture activity.
Reservoir levels
The water storage in the 14 major reservoirs of Karnataka stands at 422.11 tmcft currently, as opposed to 280.02 tmcft last year at the same time, officials informed the meeting. Mr. Gowda expressed concern over levels in some dams being less than satisfactory and asked officials to account for water losses due to evaporation in the coming months and prioritise drinking water needs over irrigation.
The meeting identified 12 districts, including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, among others, as those likely to face acute drinking water issues. Specific instruction was given to identify issues being faced by RO drinking water units in Bengaluru city. The Minister said that they should be provided 24/7 power supply and repaired when need arises on piority.
