The long-pending proposal to accord the coveted ‘Institute of National Importance’ (INI) tag to TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS University) super-specialty hospital has reached the table of the Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, with the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust board member G. Bhanuprakash Reddy making an appeal to him to moot the proposal with the Centre.

Mr. Reddy formally called on the Chief Minister during his recent visit to Tirupati and submitted a proposal to this effect.

An INI is a public higher education institution accorded special status by the Parliament. With this, the Centre recognises, monitors and provides funds to the institute to enhance it as learning centre for academics as well as research and development.

The SVIMS, which is currently maintained by the TTD Trust Board, will get a higher quantum of financial aid from the Centre, with which the hospital could extend better Medicare to the nook and corner of Rayalaseema region, Mr. Bhanuprakash explained to Mr. Naidu.

It may be recalled that the board member had already made a similar appeal to the TTD Executive Officer J. Syamala Rao and sought the proposal vetted by the trust board.

After giving a patient hearing, the Chief Minister reportedly assured to discuss the proposal with the Union Minister of Health and work out the modalities for getting clearance for the proposal.
