Even as the agitation by a section of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in front of the Secretariat has been continuing with no end in sight, the ASHAs have announced that they will organise another event to express their protest against the government which has been ignoring the workers’ agitation.
On Monday, on the 50th day of their agitation demanding better remuneration, the ASHAs will express their protest by chopping off their hair. Women cutting off their hair has in recent times emerged as a form of public protest across the world, a symbol of anger, rebellion or mourning or as an expression of solidarity with women’s rights.
The agitation by the ASHAs is seen as a women’s rights agitation as well as a one of workers’ rights. Despite the national attention the strike has drawn, the government seems to be in no mood to relent to the demands for better remuneration put forth by the health workers.
The indefinite hunger strike launched by the women as part of intensifying their agitation also entered the 10th day on Saturday.
