A senior engineer at Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) here has been detained for spying for Pakistan, providing his handlers from the neighbouring country sensitive information about the PSU, in exchange for bitcoins.

The accused has been identified as Deepraj Chandra, 36, Senior Engineer, Research and Development wing, BEL.

He hails from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The accused had been posted at the BEL headquarters at Jalahalli here and was a resident of Mathikere, sources said.

Home Minister G. Parameshwara speaking to presspersons on Thursday, said that military intelligence and the Karnataka intelligence had worked on the case and secured the suspect, for being in touch with his handlers in Pakistan.

“He had shared very sensitive, classified information with Pakistan. He is involved in treason. This is very scary. Military intelligence is taking further action,” he said.

Sources said that the accused had shared information on radar systems, operating frameworks, security protocols, details about high-ranking officials, and key installations. The accused had been sharing such information on email, WhatsApp and Telegram, the sources said. Probe was on to track down two others, who were in touch with him, sources said.

They said that BEL had suspended him and formed a fact-finding committee to probe the allegations against him.
