The beneficiary list of 394 families of Thuruthy Colony in West Kochi who will be assigned units at the newly constructed apartment complex will be further vetted since it is over a decade old.
The project was initially envisaged under the Rajiv Awas Yojana, a project aimed at making the country slum-free, in 2011. A survey found over 1,000 potential beneficiaries before it was further whittled down to 755 during 2011-12. Eventually, 394 homeless families were found eligible.
“The project received final sanction in December 2013. The Kochi Corporation was among the three Corporations in the State to be allotted the project and the only one to implement it. The beneficiaries will have to produce, among other things, the village officer’s certificate that they were indeed homeless before they are assigned apartment units,” said T.K. Asharaf, councillor, Kalvathy division.
The construction of the twin apartment complexes as part of the Thuruthy housing project has been completed. Shortly, the Chief Minister will inaugurate the twin towers. The actual assignment of the apartment units may take more time as the vetting process needs to be completed.
The Corporation built the first tower at an investment of ₹41.74 crore, while Cochin Smart Mission Limited built the second tower at a cost of ₹44.01 crore. The first tower with 11 floors and a built-up space of 10,796.42 sq.ft. has 109 apartment units of 300 sq.ft. each. Each unit comprises a dining-cum-living area, a bedroom, a kitchen, a balcony and two bathrooms. Besides, there are 81 parking slots, three elevators, lifts, and 180 sq. ft. and 800 sq. ft. open areas on the first and the 11th floors. It will also have a 105 KLD capacity sewage treatment plant. Provision has been made for an Anganwadi and 14 shops on the ground floor.
The second tower has 195 apartment units across 13 floors and a total built-up space of 10,221 sq. ft. Each floor has 15 apartments of 350 sq. ft each. Solar panels have been installed in the rooftop common area. Parking slots are available for 68 cars and 17 two-wheelers. A 100 KLD-capacity sewage treatment plant will also be set up.
The construction of sewage treatment plants in both towers remains to be completed. A plant for treating 300 kilograms of waste will also be set up.
