Bengaluru’s leading orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Chandy passes away

Thomas Chandy, an orthopaedic surgeon and the Chairman and Managing Director of HOSMAT Hospital, passed away at the age of 74 on Monday night following a prolonged lung-related illness.

He died at 11.20 p.m. at a private hospital, after undergoing treatment for over two months. Widely regarded in the city’s medical fraternity, Dr. Chandy was also known for his deep passion for music.

“Dr. Thomas Chandy had been suffering from Interstitial Lung Disease and underwent a lung transplant at Manipal Hospital on HAL Road. He breathed his last at around 11.20 p.m. on April 7 at Manipal Hospital,” a release from his family stated.

Hailing from an old Bengaluru family, he did his medical education from St. John’s Medical College in 1973. Following his training in Orthopaedics at St. John’s and St. Martha’s Hospital, Bengaluru, he went to the United States for higher studies, where he also worked for several years to come back to Bengaluru and set up HOSMAT Hospital in 1993.

An avid musician, Dr. Chandy was a passionate collector of musical instruments, with a personal collection of over 350 instruments from around the world. He was the leader and vocalist of the jazz band Jazz & Rock Revival, which celebrated its 20th year.
