The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a sensitisation programme for district-level officials here on Thursday to create awareness on the importance of BIS certifications and quality standards for products.
The programme was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Shivaraju.
He said adherence to BIS standards and quality was imperative and inline with the government’s recent initiatives, and it ensures quality control of products at all levels of procurement and consumer use.
Naredra Reddy Beesu, Scientist E, and Director of the BIS, Bengaluru, spoke of the critical role of BIS in standardising product quality and issuing essential certifications such as ISI, hallmarking for gold jewellery, and certification for foreign products. He also pointed out that the Union government mandated BIS certification for 723 products.
N. Suresh, member of the BIS, Bengaluru, made a presentation on BIS and its role in ensuring quality products and services. He also conducted a live demonstration of the BIS Care App, explaining its features for consumers and suppliers in verifying certifications and reporting defective goods.
There was a session on the Know Your Standards feature on the BIS portal, BIS certification for service delivery, and the importance of certifications for various consumer goods, including footwear, cement, and vehicle tyres.
The training covered the simple process for registering complaints related to defective products through the BIS Care App, ensuring that consumer rights are protected effectively.
K. Vijayaveeran, scientist and Director of the BIS, Bengaluru, said the initiative reaffirms the commitment of BIS to ensuring the safety, quality, and reliability of products in India, empowering consumers and enhancing the credibility of Indian-made goods both domestically and globally.
