Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a snap election to be held on 28 April, seeking a “strong, positive mandate” from Canadians. Carney announced the decision after requesting the dissolution of Parliament.
Carney, who will contest the Ottawa riding of Nepean, as reported by CBC news, highlighted the importance of the upcoming election, calling it “one of the most consequential in our lifetimes.”
Carney has pledged to support farmers and businesses amid trade tensions with the US and expand dental care for millions of Canadians. His campaign follows Justin Trudeau’s resignation on 6 January, citing internal party struggles and declining public support. Trudeau, who led the country since 2015, had faced growing criticism over the cost of living and political instability.
