Chittumala block panchayat launches unique elderly support initiative

The Chittumala block panchayat is setting a unique example by implementing the Smart Seniors project that provides support and companionship to elderly individuals who have become isolated due to various reasons in life.

The project aims to restore the lost enthusiasm of senior citizen over 60 years old, including those whose children are abroad, those living alone, and those abandoned by their children. There are activities like small trips and movie outings to keep them engaged and the panchayat has also taken steps to keep them updated about the latest developments.

The block panchayat is implementing the Smart Seniors project in four phases to ensure overall welfare of elderly residents. Initially, awareness camps were held across seven grama panchayats under the block, focussing on digital and legal literacy to empower seniors. Men and women above the age of 60 from all panchayat were selected for the camp. After assessing the data collected and considering their needs, medical camps were conducted in all panchayats. A total of 838 elderly persons participated in the medical camp led by Babulal, medical superintend, Kundara taluk hospital.

Get-togethers

After the camps, clubs for the elderly were formed and get-togethers were arranged for them to interact with each other. “As there were trips and movie outings, the participation increased. Efforts are also under way to identify and promote artistic talents for improved mental well-being. After completing all four phases, the project’s impact will be evaluated and the next phase will be planned on the basis of that,” said panchayat president Jayadevi Mohan.

At present 900 elderly individuals are part of the Smart Seniors project, making it one of the best projects of the panchayat. The project is supported by anganwadi and ASHA workers, ICDS supervisors, and Anchalumoodu CDPO Tincy Ramakrishnan.

The block panchayat has also launched a Buddy Pairing initiative for residents of its old-age home, connecting them with younger generations through Social Work and Psychology students. This involves daily phone calls to elderly persons who feel lonely and foster a sense of community. According to officials, the panchayat aims to become a hub for energetic senior citizen and further activities as part of the project will follow.
