Stressing the need for the universities in the State to be student-centric, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed the universities to introduce courses that will secure the future of students.

Universities should introduce courses that have demand in the market so that students from different backgrounds get employment opportunities. The Chief Minister made these comments on Friday during a conference with the Vice-Chancellors of universities in the State.

He said a majority of students from rural areas who could not afford education in the private sector were coming to the State-run universities, and it was the responsibility of the managements of the government universities to ensure that these students were prepared for their future needs. This was necessary at a time when students with good financial backing were joining private institutions to ensure that students from underprivileged communities could withstand the competition.

Mr. Revanth Reddy emphasised the need for scrapping courses which lost relevance and replace them with new courses to prepare students to be ready to cater to the requirements of the emerging technologies and changing dynamics. He recommended that professors who were into teaching the old methodologies were given administrative responsibilities so that universities did not become rehabilitation centres for certain categories of professors.

The Vice Chancellors brought to the Chief Minister’s notice problems such as shortage of professors, infrastructure like buildings and other amenities. Mr. Revanth Reddy assured his government’s commitment to provide funds for improvement of infrastructure in the universities and asked them to submit a comprehensive report on their requirements.
