The Surgical Nursing Unit and Surgery Unit II of Christian Medical College (CMC) has organised awareness on colorectal cancer at its campus in Vellore to mark colorectal cancer awareness month.
According to a press release, the theme of the awareness campaign was ‘Colorectal cancer: Preventable, Treatable and Beatable’. Awareness programmes were conducted on risk factors and screening protocols, which was a huge success among patients and relatives..
As part of the campaign, an exhibition on cancer was also organised. Banners in the stalls enlightened the audience on identifying the signs, risk factors, diagnosis and the screening strategies for colorectal cancers.
The puppet show was organised in relation to colorectal cancer and its prevention in English, Tamil and Hindi. Games such as picture connection, jumbled words, word puzzles, turned out to be educative and entertaining, attracting the public, staff, students and patients.
A survivors meet was also organised where they talked about their experiences of being diagnosed with cancer, evaluation, treatment, and continued support from their families and medical and nursing team. Their ability to move on and lead normal lives demonstrated their resilience, and some of the advice on daily living and healthy diet motivated many.
On the occasion, Rajavelu, former dean, Government Medical College and Hospital (GVMCH) was the chief guest.
Rohin Mittal, Head, Surgery II Unit (CMC), Sheela Durai, head, Surgical Nursing Unit, Mark Ranjan Jesudasan, Associate Director (CMC), Inian Samarasam, Head, Division of General Surgery (CMC), David Mathew, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Jeyalinda, Associate Nursing Superintendent, were present, the release said.
