Coonoor residents have urged the Forest Department to capture and relocate a sloth bear which, they allege, has been breaking into homes in search of food.

According to residents from Hatherly Road, the sloth bear has been breaking into houses, stealing food and attacking local residents. One resident of the area, speaking to The Hindu, said that the animal had also entered the house of a couple and had attacked them, causing them injuries.

The resident stated that the bear was also breaking into shops near the area and stealing provisions. Despite a cage being placed in the area on Monday, it has so far managed to evade capture they said.

When contacted, top officials from the Nilgiris Forest Division stated that they are continuing their operations to capture the animal and are also considering tranquilising and relocating it away from the area.
