The Central University of Kerala (CUK) has been granted ₹52.68 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) for the construction of a new academic block at its Periya campus. The funds allocated by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs aim to enhance the university’s infrastructure.

The proposed five-storey building, spanning 7,497 square meters, will house 25 classrooms, five departmental libraries, computer labs, office rooms, and modern facilities such as lifts and toilets. Additionally, the structure will incorporate a 50-kilowatt solar power plant, a 1 lakh-litre rainwater harvesting tank, and a seminar hall with a seating capacity of 300.

This is the largest financial allocation received by the university from a ministry other than the Ministry of Education. Previously, in 2019-20, the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs had sanctioned ₹38.23 crore for hostel construction, leading to the establishment of boys’ and girls’ hostels, which were inaugurated in June 2023 by then Minority Welfare Minister John Barla.

Vice Chancellor in charge, Vincent Mathew, expressed gratitude for the Central government’s continued support. “This new academic block is crucial for launching new programmes in the coming years,” he said.
