Eight workers have taken ill reportedly due to ammonia gas leak at a shrimp processing plant in Ananthapuram village of Thotapalli Gudur Mandal in SPSR Nellore district on Saturday. However, the situation was brought under control within few hours.

According to the locals, ammonia gas leaked in the machine room of Water Base Company. When the alarm sounded, the staff ran out in fear with gum boots. They fell on the ground in panic, and were rushed to hospital.

“First aid was provided and everyone is completely fine. All of them were recovered and discharged on the same day. There are no issues in the plant at the moment,” the company representatives told the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders who visited the plant.

Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy inquired about the gas leak incident from officials as well as the TDP leaders. He was informed that the impact of the gas leakage is minor, it was limited to the plant, and that there was no problem for the common people.

Nellore RDO Naga Santosh Anusha has collected complete details of the incident from the officials of revenue and police departments. She said, “There was a slight gas leakage in the shrimp processing plant compound. The management immediately undertook repairs.”

Condemning the reports on social media about death of the workers, the RDO said, “The plant is currently in normal condition and there is no need to panic. I request the people of the district not to believe any rumours. There was no loss of life.”
