The All India Dental Students and Surgeons Association (AIDSA) has submitted a formal representation to Telangana’s Director of Medical Education (DME) on Tuesday (April 8, 2025) requesting action to appoint qualified dental faculty and establish functional dental units across all government medical colleges in the State.
AIDSA national president Dr. MD Manzur Ahmed, after submitting the representation to DME, said that the request aligns with the Gazette of India notifications dated July 3, 2015, and March 10, 2017, as well as the staffing norms mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC). “The integration of dental departments in medical colleges is essential to providing comprehensive training for future doctors and improving access to oral healthcare,” he said.
According to NMC guidelines, every medical college with an intake of 100 MBBS students must have a Department of Dentistry staffed with at least one professor, one associate professor, one assistant professor, one junior resident, and four dental technicians. For colleges admitting 250 MBBS students, faculty and support staff numbers must be increased proportionately.
“There are currently 34 government medical colleges in Telangana, and it is imperative that each of them establish fully functional dental units to comply with national standards,” the letter said.
