Senior civil judge and DLSA Member-Secretary Parashuram Doddmani has called upon farmers to adopt scientific agricultural practices and low-water farming techniques while maintaining soil fertility.
Inaugurating the World Water Day programme at Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Dharwad on Wednesday, he said that the objective of World Water Day is to raise awareness about the importance of water, conservation of natural resources and pollution control.
Lauding the environment conservation efforts of the WALMI team, he said that the District Legal Services Authority will collaborate in such initiatives.
He also advised farmers to take advantage of the Consumer Protection Commission for legal support in case of losses due to poor quality seeds, chemical fertilisers or pesticides supplied by manufacturers and sellers.
Elaborating on climate change and rising global temperatures due to deforestation, environmentalist P.V. Hiremath pointed out that natural resources are not just for human beings but also for all living beings.
Mentioning that human-induced activities are leading to loss of biodiversity, he stressed on the need to preserve India’s rich bio-diversity.
Presiding over the event, WALMI director B.Y. Bandivaddar spoke about the theme for World Water Day 2025 and said that due to global climate change, temperatures in the Himalayan region are rising, leading to glacier melting.
“The phenomenon is directly related to human activities and its consequences cannot be ignored,” he said.
Mr. Badivaddar pointed out that water resource depletion, deforestation, industrialisation, urbanisation, waste management issues, plastic usage and chemical fertilisers are reducing water retention capacity of the soil and the increase in carbon emissions is accelerating glacier melting, leading to floods, groundwater depletion and rising sea levels.
Progressive farmers Pulkeshi Surendra Nandrekari from Jamkhandi, H.B. Satish from Davangere, D. Ningappa and Kodi Basaveshwara were felicitated on the occasion.
