MEERUT: An FIR has been registered against the authorities of a private university in Meerut after some students were seen in a purported video offering ‘namaz’ on its campus, police said on Saturday. A student and three security guards have been suspended so far after an initial probe, an official of the IIMT University said.
In the video, around 50 students could be seen purportedly praying on the campus. The ‘namaz’ may have taken place on March 13. SP (rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said they’ve started a probe. The university authorities were charged under BNS section 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings).
Meanwhile, Sunil Sharma, media in-charge of IIMT Group, told TOI: “Once the video surfaced, a committee was constituted to investigate the matter. We learned that no permission was taken from the university administration for ‘namaz’ on campus… It was an empty field and seemed to be a spontaneous act.”
The “main culprit” was called by the investigating panel to present his case, but the student did not appear, and “he has been suspended”. “An appeal has been made to the police and local administration to take appropriate legal action against them,” Sharma said.
