In a rare and complex case, doctors at the government-run Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad successfully treated a man with a penetrating injury caused by a screwdriver that entered through his right eye and extended into the frontal lobe of his brain.

The frontal lobe is the largest part of the brain, located at the front of the cerebral cortex, behind the forehead

The patient initially visited a private eye institute in Banjara Hills here on April 8 with the condition. Investigations revealed that the object had pierced the frontal bone and entered the brain, making it a life-threatening injury that required immediate neurosurgical intervention.

The case was then referred to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, the following day, but the patient was subsequently redirected to Gandhi Hospital on April 10. Upon arrival, the ophthalmology department at the hospital examined the injury and confirmed that the eyeball itself remained unaffected. The patient was then transferred to the neurosurgery team.

The neurosurgery department at the hospital successfully removed the embedded screwdriver and managed the associated brain injury. The patient is now under post-operative care and recovering well, hospital authorities said.
