The ‘Gosamrudhi’ insurance scheme for dairy farmers and cattle under their care, a joint venture between the Central and State governments under the National Livestock Mission, has been launched in Ernakulam district.

The insurance scheme provides coverage to dairy farmers and their cattle, including cows and buffaloes, against risks such as animal death and a decline in milk yield. Farmers in both the general and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) categories are eligible to participate, according to a press release.

For an animal costing around ₹65,000, the insurance premium will be ₹1,356 for general category farmers and ₹774 for those in the SC/ST category. For a three-year cover, the premium will be ₹3,319 for the general category and ₹1,892 for the SC/ST category. The insurance premiums are subsidised by the government and Kerala Feeds Limited at ₹1,456 and ₹100, respectively.

“Paying a premium of ₹100 will provide an accident cover of ₹5 lakh for the farmer. All 3,325 milch animals and their owners are entitled to this insurance cover,” the release added. Farmers interested in joining the scheme should contact the veterinary centres in their respective local bodies.
