‘Poker Face’ (2023-Present) – Peacock

A lighter spin on the murder mystery genre, this case-of-the-week series follows Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a casino worker with the foolproof ability to sense when someone is lying. After she witnesses a crime in the casino where she works, Charlie goes on the run – but trouble seems to follow wherever she goes. Each episode begins with a murder, and the audience gets to follow along as Charlie unravels the story one lie at a time.

Lyonne makes Charlie both lovable and genuine, and you’ll root for her every mile that she travels as she encounters an ever-changing cast of A-list actors. (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Adrien Brody, Judith Light, and Chloë Sevigny are only a few of the featured performers who come along on this wild ride.) Benjamin Bratt is perfectly cast as the mob enforcer charged with tracking her down. Created by Rian Johnson of Knives Out fame, this fresh take on a whodunnit will leave you hungry for more.

‘Big Little Lies’ (2017-Present) – Max

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Meryl Streep all appear in this HBO family drama. When a little girl is injured on the first day of kindergarten, factions form in the wealthy community as the parents take sides in a minor conflict that soon escalates out of control.

Secrets are revealed about the home lives of five women who, from the outside, appear almost perfect, and it all culminates in a shocking death at a PTA fundraiser that goes horribly wrong. The first season works as a standalone story, but the second season features a stunning courtroom scene between Kidman and Streep that feels like an acting master class.

Big Little Lies is the perfect combination of soapy drama, moving performances, and a thought-provoking message about how violence begets more violence. It also has stunning cinematography that may make you want to move to Santa Barbara.
