Jessica Capshaw was “giddy with excitement” when she went in to audition for season 3 of Mike White’s anthology series, The White Lotus.
The Grey’s Anatomy alum revealed she auditioned for one of the trio of women — ultimately played by Michelle Monaghan, Carrie Coon and Leslie Bibb — during the Wednesday, April 9, “Call it Short & Sweet” segment of her “Call It What It Is” podcast.
“I auditioned for one of those parts,” she told cohost and Grey’s costar Camilla Luddington. “I auditioned for Leslie Bibb’s part, and I remember getting the audition and being like, I mean, I’m just such a huge fan of the show, so I was giddy with excitement.”
Capshaw, 48, went on to say how she enjoyed watching Bibb’s take on the character Kate, who rediscovers the importance of female friendship as she stays at The White Lotus hotel in Thailand with her longtime pals Laurie (Coon) and Jaclyn (Monaghan).
“It’s always so fun to, you know, put together an audition and see where it goes and then see it come to fruition,” Capshaw said. “Because what’s unbelievably remarkable and wild about the casting processes and I guess not shocking [is] we’re all very different. We all have a very different take on it. So watching Leslie’s I was like, oh my God, I was so in and I thought she was fantastic.”
Though Capshaw did not land a part in season 3 of White’s hit HBO show, she plans to keep auditioning, noting that it took multiple attempts before she scored her role as Dr. Arizona Robbins on Grey’s in 2009.

“I’ll audition, I’ll keep auditioning. That’s what I did for Grey’s,” Capshaw said. “I loved Grey’s Anatomy and I was like, ‘I’ll audition all the times!’ And I took three times, so I’m hoping it’ll just take two for Mike White and The White Lotus. I’ll just keep going.”
Luddington, 41, offered to play Capshaw’s sister on a future season, if White, 54, is open to it.
“We’re going to come on as sisters and, yeah, we’re going to do some tricky s***,” Capshaw said, with Luddington adding, “I’m going to kill Greg [Jon Gries].”
The White Lotus aired its finale last week, wrapping up a season full of drama, intrigue and weird familial relations. In the end, two characters died, one became very rich and one landed a dream job, among other outcomes.
Although Capshaw and Luddington feel The White Lotus isn’t a place anyone would want to stay at anymore amid all these murders, they’re always down for another season — especially if it’s at a “ski chalet” or a “Caribbean situation.”
