When it comes to being a mother of a son, you take what you can get, at least that’s how actress Kathryn Hahn feels.
While guest on the Tuesday, April 1 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Hahn and Drew Barrymore talked about their relationships with their children.
When it comes to Hahn and 15-year-old daughter Mae, the Agatha All Along star admitted they have the typical mother-daughter relationship that’s fueled by a “hotbox” of hormones.
“My daughter and I, like there’s a lot of like [yelling sounds] and then we always end up cuddling and watching Gilmore Girls at the end of the day,” Hahn, who shares both of her children with husband Ethan Sandler, told Barrymore.
But for Hahn and her son, 18-year-old Leonard, the Studio actress says there is a bit less cuddling. As she prepares to send her oldest off to college, Hahn said she’s “a disaster.”
“I’m trying to get all the tears out now so that I can just be like, so happy for him when he goes off — but right now, it’s, like, a mess,” Hahn, 51, said of her relationship with her son.
“I think this was Tina Fey, but we used to laugh that having a teenage son is like being in a toxic relationship,” Hahn continued.

“Because you’re literally like, ‘Hey, just texting again.’ Like, standing by the phone, ‘Is he gonna call me back?’”
Barrymore, despite having only daughters, understood where Hahn was coming from, saying Hahn’s relationship with her kids made Barrymore feel “normal” and compared it also to being “on an audition all the time.”
“You got to play it cool,” Hahn continued. “It’s like a cat. If they give you any kind of, like, any sort of attention you got to be like, ‘What? Huh?’ because, otherwise, bolting.”
Hahn said her son, who is about to go of to college, “still gives the hug, it’s like, [gives Barrymore a half-hearted side hug] — I’ll take it!” she added, admitting defeat.
