The REC Foundation, the CSR arm of Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC), has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital (KKCTH) to upgrade its facilities. Thara Ramesh, chief programme manager of REC, and S. Rengarajan, CEO of KKCTH signed the MoA.
The funds will be used to procure equipment such as advanced monitors for operation theatres; warmers for neonatal intensive care unit; and laboratory equipment to perform advanced blood tests.
Ms. Thara said REC Foundation had sanctioned 300 CSR projects and disbursed ₹1,100 crore for various CSR activities.
She said the Independent Director of the foundation, Thirupathi Narayanan, was instrumental in ensuring that funds were disbursed to the hospital.
Mr. Narayanan said the foundation believed in serving underprivileged sections of society. IKKCTH needed funds as deficiency in infrastructure could hurt the poor patients who need medical treatment, he said.
Though as much a sixth of the receivables for REC came from Tamil Nadu the State had not benefited much through the CSR funds of REC Foundation, he added. Hence a concerted effort was made to fund projects. “Three months ago, we procured seven mobile medical units through the Foundation in districts such as Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, KanyaKumari, Krishnagiri and the Nilgiris,” he said.
Currently, 150 people in each village in the districts are receiving medical treatment free of cost at their doorstep, he informed. “We are planning to expand the mobile medical units to more districts,” he announced recalling funds provided to Sankara Eye Hospital to conduct cataract surgery for 8,000 people. “We are funding organisations that are working with people at the grassroots. We will support you further as well,” he added.
Mr. Rengarajan appreciated REC for their focus on sanitation and hygiene facilities, and various socially relevant issues. He thanked the Foundation for its support.
