The Kozhikode Corporation, with the support of the District Sports Council, is setting up a sports academy, aimed at ensuring social cooperation, health, physical and mental well being of the citizens. The ‘Corporation Academy for Sports Kozhikode (CASK) gained the approval of the Corporation council on Tuesday, when its bylaw was passed.
The services of the academy will be open for every one in the city including permanent and temporary residents, students in schools and colleges in the city as well as those working in establishments within the city. The services will be available irrespective of age and gender.
“The academy will also strive to check the increasing drug abuse in society. Special attention will be given to physical activities of differently abled people,” said C. Rekha, education and sports standing committee chairperson of the Corporation.
Academy’s motto
The academy with the motto ‘Sports for All- All for Sports’ will work as a non profitable organisation registered under the Charitable Societies Act of 1860. It works in two spheres — the ward-level public sports committees to enhance public health and physical fitness and professional training centres to nurture promising talents.The talents found through community sporting programmes and grass roots level training will be offered specialised training to raise them to international standards. The CASK will make use of all the sports infrastructure available within the city, including the expertise and infrastructure of the district and State sports councils. It will also develop newer infrastructure in due course.
The CASK will be governed by an administrative panel headed by the Mayor as the chairperson, Deputy Mayor as the co-chairperson, chairperson of the education standing committee as the vice-chairperson and director of CASK as the convener. Besides, it will have seven members from the Corporation council, besides the Corporation secretary, health officer, one representative each from the district sports council, Corporation sports council, College of Physical Education and a subject expert (sportsperson).
The CASK will also create a database of the health and fitness of the citizens with the help of the Corporation.
