A 27-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries on Sunday at a private hospital in Kacheguda after allegedly being set on fire by her husband at their home in Patel Nagar, Amberpet.
According to the complaint filed by Rekha’s mother, Sangepu Padma, the victim had been facing constant harassment from her husband, Pidugu Naveen, who was reportedly addicted to alcohol and frequently accused her of infidelity. “Rekha, who married Naveen in 2018, lived with him and their two young children. Despite repeated interventions from family elders, the abuse continued,” said the police.
On the night of March 9, Naveen allegedly returned home in an inebriated state, started an argument, and accused his wife of having an extramarital affair. The quarrel escalated, and he allegedly poured petrol on Rekha before setting her on fire. “Hours later, at around 4 a.m. on March 10, Naveen informed Rekha’s mother that she had sustained burns and was being taken to Osmania Hospital,” added the police.
Before succumbing to her injuries, Rekha provided a statement confirming that her husband had set her on fire with the intent to kill her. Following her death, the Amberpet police registered a case and took Naveen into custody.
