Motorola, the company that made your favorite flip phone twenty years ago, is about to enter its seventh generation of manufacturing folding smartphones. The company teased an event later this month where it will reveal new folding smartphones. This next batch of Razrs is expected to get a significant performance boost, brighter inside and outside displays, and improved camera performance. We’ll learn more about it when Motorola debuts the device on April 24.

Motorola teases the presence of something that will be “iconic,” but otherwise, the video teaser is pretty short. It’s about ten seconds of levitating Razr devices fanning in and out as they open and close. We start by seeing two Motorola devices, which quickly separate into three smartphones before it’s consolidated back to two. So far, the consensus among pundits and blogs is that there will be three Razr models to choose from, though it’s confusing because Moto has only ever launched two folding phones at a time. Last year, it came out with the standard Razr and Razr Plus. The chatter is that this year, there is either a third “super-powered” variant or a supremely basic foldable, priced alongside Motorola’s budget offerings, like the Moto G series.
9to5Google also noticed that at one point, the floating Razr phone spells out AI. This is likely a reference to Moto AI, akin to Samsung’s Galaxy AI. Moto AI features are expected to include abilities like notification summaries and automatic transcriptions. There may even be a little image editing magic. As with most of the big phone makers Motorola is promising big with its AI features. The idea is that its LLMs will “take actions” for you, like ordering coffee from a shop nearby. That would be an impressive feat given the issues Apple’s been facing and the more pared down features Google has offered.
Other rumblings include whether the Razrs will use a MediaTek Dimensity chip or if the “pro”/”plus” variant will adopt the Snapdragon 8 Elite to AI with the rest of its Android brethren. Whatever the plan we’re learned most of it later this month.
