A legal battle over 404 acres of land at Munambam, Ernakulam, Kerala, has taken on troubling social and communal dimensions.

The Kerala State Waqf Board has staked its claim to the property, which was transferred as Waqf — an inalienable endowment under Islamic law — to an educational institution in Kozhikode. The descendants of those who purchased the land from the institution now face the threat of eviction.

The disputed land in Munambam is inhabited by about 600 families, most of them Christians.

The occupants of the land have been protesting demanding that the revenue rights of their holdings be restored. They claim to have purchased the holdings from a trust, for which the property was reportedly given as Waqf in 1950.
