The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned two foot-over-bridges (FOBs) at Yekkur and Mukka on the National Highway-66.

In addition, New Mangalore Port Road Company Limited (NMPRCL) has invited bids for the development and maintenance of 37.472 km stretch of the two National Highways between Surathkal and B.C. Road at an estimated cost of ₹26.05 crore, according to Captain Brijesh Chowta, Member of Parliament, Dakshina Kannada.

“The FOBs will come up near the College of Fisheries at Yekkur and near the Srinivas Hospital at Mukka. They will help pedestrians,” he said in a release.

Surathkal – B C Road project

The scope of Surathkal-B.C. Road project includes overlaying (re-asphalting) 11.084 km stretch between Surathkal and Padil via Kuluru, Kuntikana and Nanthoor, carriageway cleaning and removing rank vegetation, road property management and maintenance and road safety improvements (engineering works).

The Surathkal-B.C. Road stretch comprises National Highways NH-66 (from Surathkal to Nanthoor Junction) and NH 73 (Nanthoor Junction to B.C. Road via Padil).

Service roads

Capt. Chowta said National Infrabuild Private Limited, Tirthalli and National Projects Private Limited (JV), the lowest bidder, has been awarded the project of building service roads (on both sides) on four locations on the NH-66.

The locations are at Mulky (500 mt), Padupanambur (310 mt), Haleyangady (550 mt) and Beeri (700 mt).

“These developmental works will commence soon and are expected to significantly enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety,” Capt. Chowta said.

“This re-affirms our commitment to improving road infrastructure and ensuring the safety of commuters in Dakshina Kannada. With enhanced service roads, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and improved connectivity to New Mangalore Port, this will boost both trade and transport as well as tourism prospects of the region,” the MP said adding that he thanked Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, for sanctioning the projects and funds.

Earlier during his meeting with the Ministry and Ministry officials and in his letters to the Ministry, Capt. Chowta had highlighted the need to urgently address various issues of the NH stretch from B.C. Road to Surathkal.
