To make Guntur plastic-free, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar participated in the ‘Swachh Andhra-Swarna Andhra’ initiative on Saturday (March 15). The cleanliness drive, organised by the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) at Y Junction in Autonagar, was attended by local MLA Mohammed Naseer Ahmed and several civic leaders.
Dr. Pemmasani emphasised the dangers of plastic pollution, calling it a “modern-day menace” that is polluting waterbodies and affecting marine life. He urged citizens to maintain cleanliness in their homes, businesses and public spaces by properly disposing off waste at designated bins.
“Unchecked plastic waste leads to severe environmental damage and even contributes to cancer through contaminated food chains,” he warned. He stressed the importance of collective responsibility and encouraged citizens to hold leaders accountable for environmental initiatives.
During the event, Dr. Pemmasani led a pledge for cleanliness with students and residents. He also personally participated in cleaning an unsanitary area along with MLA Naseer Ahmed.
Deputy Mayor Sheikh Sajeela, Industrial Development Corporation representative Degala Prabhakar, corporators and other local leaders took part in the drive, reaffirming their commitment to a cleaner, greener Andhra Pradesh.
