PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss rued the instances of violence within the student community after an eighth standard student attacked another student with a sickle in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli district, and urged the State Government to reintroduce moral lessons and increase physical education in schools.

In a statement, he said that the instances of students attacking fellow students is on an upward trend in southern districts. “In August 2023, student Chinnadurai was slashed inside his home in Nanguneri. In Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi district, a student travelling in a bus was waylaid and attacked. Such incidents cause worry about where our society is heading to. Even in this incident, there seems to have been some animosity arising out of an issue over a pencil. The student should have moved on. But the student had so much hate that he concealed a weapon in his bag and attacked. This trend should be corrected,” he said.

Schools should be a place to impart education and discipline, he added.
