Former BJP State president K. Surendran on Friday (April 11) alleged that extremist forces were operating freely in Kerala under the guise of protests against the Waqf Amendment Act.

He said religious extremists, led by Jamaat-e-Islami and supported by both the ruling and Opposition fronts, had recently besieged the Calicut airport, displaying pictures of the Muslim Brotherhood founder and a Hamas extremist leader. “The Muslim Brotherhood is an organisation that has been banned even in Egypt. What is the connection between the Hamas leader and the Waqf Amendment Act?” he asked. Mr. Surendran said that while the Centre was taking a strong stand against religious extremists, Kerala had adopted a favourable approach.

He questioned what action the police had taken against those who besieged the airport, an act, he said, that posed a threat to national security.

He also alleged that the Indian Union Muslim League supported the campaign in Malappuram against vaccination, while no progressive parties were questioning its position.

“Even after the organisation was banned, sleeper cells of the Popular Front of India are active in the State,” Mr. Surendran alleged.
