The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has issued an advisory to matrimonial sites, recommending mandatory ID verification and restricting VPN (Virtual Private Network) users during registration to prevent fraudsters from creating fake profiles.

In recent times, scammers have been misusing matrimonial platforms to carry out fraud.

They create fake profiles to target individuals seeking marriage proposals, build trust through regular conversations, and eventually lure victims into traps.

Common tactics include introducing fake investment opportunities with promises of high returns, requesting payments for customs clearance of fictitious gifts sent from abroad, or asking for money to handle alleged emergencies.

Additional Director-General of Police (Cyber Crime), Sandeep Mittal, said an increasing number of cybercrimes involve fraudsters posing as potential partners on matrimonial sites, bonding with victims — primarily through WhatsApp calls — and persuading them to invest in fake platforms such as City Index and Oxgatens.

These websites appear genuine, complete with fabricated success stories and false profit figures.

Victims are often encouraged to begin with small investments, for which they receive initial returns.

Hundreds of complaints

As they invest more, withdrawals become impossible, and the fraudsters disappear, leaving them with significant financial losses. From 2024 to date, 379 complaints related to matrimonial scams have been registered in Tamil Nadu.

To safeguard the public, the Cyber Crime Wing has blocked fake investment websites used by scammers in matrimonial fraud.
