School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday engaged in a war of words on social media over the State’s stance on NEP.

Asserting that there had been no sudden change in stance, Mr. Mahesh said, “The letter dated February 15, 2024, is not an endorsement of the National Education Policy 2020.”

He was responding to Mr. Pradhan, who had posted a letter from the Tamil Nadu government regarding its intention to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to implement the PM SHRI scheme.

“Spreading misinformation won’t change the facts. Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed NEP, 2020, because it undermines our successful education model. Tamil Nadu engages with Central schemes only when they are beneficial to students, but that doesn’t mean blind acceptance of any scheme or framework,” Mr. Mahesh said.

Pointing out that the letter states that a committee would be constituted, Mr. Mahesh said a decision on implementing the scheme would be taken based on the findings and recommendations of the committee.

“If anyone is playing politics, it’s those who are trying to impose NEP and distort Tamil Nadu’s culture and legacy. What we need from you is to please understand that the diversity of India is its strength, not weakness,” the Minister added.
