The Tamil Nadu Mediation and Conciliation Centre (TNMCC) celebrated its 20th foundation day, termed as Mediation Day, on the Madras High Court campus on Wednesday with its chairman Justice S.S. Sundar distributing pamphlets highlighting the benefits of settling disputes through mediation. TNMCC members Justices Anita Sumanth, G.K. Ilanthiraiyan and D. Bharatha Chakravarthy too participated in the celebration. The centre’s director, K. Balasubramanian, said TNMCC was the first court annexed mediation centre to be established in the country on April 9, 2005.
Since then, mediation centres had been established in all court complexes in 38 districts and 146 Taluks and every year, the foundation day was being celebrated as Mediation Day throughout the State. The centre provides training to the mediators and facilitates dispute resolution through them.
Highlighting the benefits of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, the director said, mediation provides an opportunity to the litigants to iron out their differences across the table and provides a win-win situation for the rival parties who need not spend their valuable time and energy on long drawn litigation process. He pointed out that the courts could order refund of court fees if disputes get resolved through mediation.
