Tension prevailed at Sankavaram village under Annavaram police limits in Kakinada district on Tuesday as miscreants reportedly desecrated the statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The villagers who woke up to find the incident staged a protest in front of the statue, demanding identification and arrest of the miscreants. On being alerted by the protest, the Peddapuram divisional police rushed to the spot.

Peddapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police D. Srihari Raju told The Hindu: “Some miscreants have garlanded the statue with chappals which were removed on Tuesday. Investigation is on.” Later, the locals called off their protest and demanded the police to speed up the investigation.
