By providing gentle pressure to your legs, ankles, and feet, compression socks are designed to relieve swelling, improve circulation and reduce built-up fluid. “Compression socks are frequently used for the prevention and treatment of conditions involving venous and lymphatic insufficiency in the lower limbs, such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), lymphedema, and chronic venous insufficiency,” explains Matthew E. Sikina, MD, sports medicine physician at Hospital for Special Surgery.
However, compression socks aren’t solely beneficial for people with chronic medical conditions: Those who sit or stand for long periods of time, frequent travelers, athletes, and pregnant people might find relief by wearing them as well. And while compression socks are great at relieving swelling, they also reduce foot fatigue, mitigate pain, and promote recovery after surgery or strenuous running. To find the best compression socks for every need, we spoke to podiatrists, vein experts, and sports medicine specialists and tested 37 pairs ourselves. A doctor from our Medical Expert Board also reviewed this article for medical and scientific accuracy.
Finding the Right Compression Level
Compression socks are categorized by their level of compression—basically, how much pressure they provide—which is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). (Look for this information on the package or listing.) Higher numbers equal more support but also slightly higher risk: “Moderate to firm compression socks are at a higher risk of causing increased skin irritation, numbness, or impaired circulation,” says Sikina. Mild to moderate compression is safe for most people, but shop based on your needs and how you intend to use them—to start, check with your healthcare provider to see which level of compression they recommend.
- 8–15mmHg (Mild): This level is ideal for everyday wear, for those who want to prevent swelling when sitting or standing for long periods (like nurses and desk workers), as well as preventing varicose veins during pregnancy. “Mild compression socks generally have minimal safety concerns such as mild discomfort or skin irritation,” says Sikina.
- 15–20mmHg (Moderate): These are appropriate for those who experience more than just mild swelling while sitting at a desk. They’re great for alleviating discomfort from standing jobs, pregnancy, travel, mild varicose veins, venous leg ulcers, small spider veins, and acute DVT. Moderate and mild compression levels serve similar needs, so if you’re not sure which is best for you, check with your healthcare provider.
- 20–30mmHg (Firm): This is the lowest medical-use compression level, meaning they may be recommended for anyone who wants to prevent DVT, recover post-surgery, and reduce varicose veins. Experts also recommend this level of compression for athletes who need help recovering from intense exercise.
- 30–40mmHg (Extra firm) and 40–50mmHg (Medical grade): These levels of compression should only be used with a prescription from a doctor. They’ll recommend them if you suffer from issues such as chronic venous insufficiency, severe varicose veins, or severe swelling. (We didn’t test these because they require a prescription, but Dua highly recommends the brands Sigvaris or Jobst to her patients when prescribing extra firm and medical grade compression socks, as they’re comfortable and offer graduated pressure.) “Extra firm and medical grade compression socks carry an even greater level of risk, including skin breakdown or impaired circulation, and should only be used under medical supervision. This is especially true in individuals with diabetes or circulatory disorders,” explains Sikina.
How We Selected the Best Compression Socks
Our team spoke with podiatrists, vein specialists, and sports medicine experts to learn what makes a pair of compression socks useful for individual situations. All healthcare professionals suggest that different compression levels will dictate the benefits and use cases for compression socks. Then, we had 15 people test 37 pairs of compression socks, testing each pair for a week at a time and wearing them for a four-hour minimum per day.
We narrowed down our top picks based on the following criteria:
- Compression level: Because different compression levels offer different benefits and should be chosen based on specific needs, we tested a variety of compression socks across mild, moderate, and firm compression levels.
- Effectiveness: We made sure each pair of compression socks accomplished what they’re meant to do: provide relief. Our editors took note of whether or not their feet felt less fatigued, if they noticed less swelling, and if they experienced less pain or discomfort as a whole.
- Material: While compression level is the most important factor when choosing compression socks, material is a close second. Material can alter how snug or loose the socks feel and how well they’ll hold up under certain conditions. During the testing process, our editors reported on the socks’ breathability, if they dug into their skin, and how well the socks held up after washing.
- Use case: Compression socks can be used for many situations, such as sitting or standing for long periods and exercising. We put each pair of socks to the test by working at our desks for long durations, going on strenuous hikes, and traveling.
For this list, we opted for pairs that offered graduated compression (tighter at the ankle, gradually loosening up the calf) for better circulation and weighed factors like durability (retention of compression over time), odor control properties, and overall value.
It’s important to note we did not test extra firm (30–40 mmHg) or medical grade (40–50 mmHg) compression socks, as these must be prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Why We Like It
This pair hits the sweet spot of comfort and functionality, with a special material, copper, to promote better healing. Anahita Dua, MD, Director of the Vascular Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, recommends mild compression socks with a compression level of 8–15 mmHg for mild edema (or feet swelling) usually caused by prolonged periods of sitting or standing. And while copper-infused clothing might sound odd, experts suggest this feature offers significant benefits: Besides reducing bacterial and fungal growth, copper-infused clothing can improve insulin sensitivity in certain types of muscle, which is helpful for people with diabetes and autoimmune diseases.
The Dr. Motion Solid Copper Infused compression socks are anti-microbial, anti-odor, and anti-inflammatory, thanks to copper-infused ions that provide a perfect mild compression. Beyond the unique material, however, their overall support and comfort are impressive. “The socks feel good, not too tight or constricting, they felt great all day, unlike other compression socks which I can only wear for a few hours at a time,” our editor said. Not to mention, our editor’s legs felt less tired after wearing these Dr. Motion socks. During testing, we also found these socks breathable and soft, and they held up well in the wash.
It’s Worth Noting
Just because these socks are advertised for men doesn’t mean they’re not suitable for women. If you’re interested in copper-infused compression socks, give these a try.

Why We Like It
We recommend the Dr. Socko Everyday Compression socks because they offer a slightly stronger (yet still mild) 10–15 mmHg compression level compared to our other top pick, the Dr. Motion Solid Copper Infused socks. These socks also have gradual compression, which means they provide gentle pressure that’s evenly distributed along the leg without any specific tight spots. This feature makes them comfortable to wear for longer periods to improve circulation for those who experience mild swelling throughout the day.
These socks made our editor’s feet feel less fatigued by the end of a long workday, and she explained that they were the “most comfortable compression socks [she’s] ever worn.” She also noted: “They didn’t bunch up or feel loose, [and] they didn’t dig into my skin like compression socks usually do. I wore these for a full day and wasn’t desperate to take them off at the end of the day, which is nice.” She reported that these socks kept her feet cool, which makes sense since they’re made of bamboo, known for its cooling properties. These socks also contain moisture-wicking Lycra. You can wear these for long periods, and your feet and legs will stay cool and dry.
It’s Worth Noting
These socks can’t be tossed in the dryer; per the manufacturers’ instructions, they should be air-dried. So, when you plan on wearing them, make sure to wash them far enough in advance.

Why We Like It
The Comrad Recycled Cotton Compression Socks offer a moderate 15–20 mmHg compression that’s perfect for travelers, nurses, and pregnant people alike. Dua explains that moderate compression levels of 15–20 mmHg are ideal for those who travel frequently or long distances, as well as people who stand for long periods of time.
Our editor, who struggles with painful swelling, loves how these socks provide enough support and compression to keep fluid circulating, but they aren’t so tight that they cause even more discomfort. “My legs felt recharged! I appreciated that they were not too tight or restrictive,” she explains. Importantly, these socks don’t slip or move around and are comfortable all day long; our editor wore them for 12 hours at a time.
We also liked that these socks fit wide feet and have large calf circumference options (second only to our Best Medium-Firm Pick, Wello Wide Calf Compression Socks). Comrad offers a variety of sizes and options to keep most people comfortable. Even better, this brand allows size exchanges (even after wearing them) within 30 days of receiving the product.

Why We Like It
The Sockwell Women’s Trail Blazer Socks are made from merino wool, a high-quality fiber that’s moisture-wicking and regulates temperature; plus, added cushioning along the sole of the foot provides extra arch support for comfort and plantar fasciitis pain relief.
Our editor, who went on a hike while testing these socks, agreed, “The additional support on the arch and ankle added a noticeable comfort on my hike.” Also, prone to foot and ankle swelling, our tester noted that her feet and ankle had no swelling issues thanks to this pair. We were impressed with the soft fabric that held up well after washing (though we did notice a bit of pilling, but it didn’t make the socks less comfortable or effective).
It’s Worth Noting
The heel may rub a bit on the first wear if they don’t fit properly. However, this should correct itself after the first wash.

Why We Like It
The Wellow Wide Calf Compression Socks stand out in a few ways: They offer the widest calf circumference (22 inches), the boldest colors, and compression levels of 18 to 25 mmHg, which is squarely between medium and firm. For this reason, these socks can be used for a range of needs, such as pregnancy, travel, athletic performance, and preventing varicose veins from getting worse.
These are the warmest and thickest socks we tested, making them ideal for use in colder weather. Our tester reported that these socks kept her legs, feet, and toes toasty during the day, both indoors and out. Despite long days sitting at her desk, these socks made her legs feel “fresh and energized.”
We loved that these socks come in a variety of colors and designs, making them our most fun and versatile recommendation. Our tester also appreciated that these socks are seamless, so they didn’t cause any blisters, pressure points, or discomfort. People with wider calves will appreciate that these don’t cause pitching or digging into the skin.
It’s Worth Noting
These are thick, warm socks, so although they can be worn every day in most seasons, some people may find them too hot to use in the summer.

Why We Like It
Between their high compression level and merino wool material, these Smartwool Women’s Run compression socks offer temperature-regulation and firm compression. Compression of 20–30 mmHg is ideal for athletes who need support while recovering from intense exercise. They’re also recommended for those who suffer from “moderate varicose veins, moderate swelling, and post varicose vein treatment,” explains Sikina.
Merino wool adjusts to your temperature by keeping you warm when you’re cool and cool when you’re warm. It also draws moisture from the skin and releases it, which keeps you from feeling a chill from damp clothes, and absorbs bacteria so you can avoid unpleasant odors. Our tester found this to be true, noting the socks didn’t feel sweaty and damp despite her long hikes while wearing them. She also appreciated that these socks stayed in place and prevented any foot or ankle swelling. “My calves get notoriously tight and sore during long walks or hikes, but the compression socks reduced my delayed onset muscle soreness,” our editor explained.
These socks also fit the largest range of shoe sizes of any on our list, spanning from a men’s size 3 to 17.5 and a women’s 4 to 15.5.
It’s Worth Noting
These socks pill and shrink a bit after the first wash, but not so much that it bothered our editor.
