The Handmaid’s Tale returns on Tuesday, April 8, after a long hiatus — two years and five months, to be exact. It’s safe to say many fans need a refresher on where June, Serena and more left off before the sixth and final season premiere.
What Happened to June in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5?
After June (Elisabeth Moss) and other handmaids brutally killed Fred (Joseph Fiennes), Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) made sure that June and Luke’s (O-T Fagbenle) daughter Hannah played a prominent part in the Commander’s televised funeral. Hannah wore purple, indicating that she’s training to be a wife. June was more focused than ever on getting her daughter back.
Meanwhile, the Canadians were getting fed up with American refugees. One man targeted June, intentionally hitting her with his car. Luke beat up the driver, sending him to the hospital where he died due to his injuries. Luke is now wanted for murder.

With tensions rising in Canada, June and Luke decided to leave on a train. Luke surrenders himself to the authorities so June and baby Nichole can make their escape. June is shocked when she discovers Serena on the train with her.
Who Else Was in Canada at the End of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5?
Luke ended the season in handcuffs while June’s BFFs Moira (Samira Wiley) and Rita (Amanda Bruegel) remain committed to helping refugees any way they can. Mark (Sam Jaeger) is the U.S. refugee representative who helps them along the way, often bringing in intel from across the border.
What Happened to Serena Joy in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5?

Serena was pregnant with Fred’s baby when he died. Gilead wasn’t prepared for her unique situation as a pregnant but unmarried wife, so she was given a position as a “global ambassador,” sent to spread the gospel of Gilead.
When June and Luke were captured in No Man’s Land, June was brought to Serena, who decided to kill the men with them instead of June. Then, she went into labor and June had to help her birth her son, Noah.
After going back to Canada, a religious family, the Wheelers, took care of Serena, but they quickly took too much control, treating her much like a handmaid. She fled their home with Noah and ended up on a train escaping Toronto with June.
Who Is in Gilead at the End of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5?

Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) married Naomi (Ever Carradine) after her husband was killed for raping a handmaid. Janine (Madeline Brewer), who birthed Naomi’s first child, was assigned to be their handmaid. She quickly got into trouble for losing her temper and the Eyes took her away while Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) looked troubled.
Meanwhile, Nick (Max Minghella) is Nichole’s father, so he’s always committed to protecting June and his daughter. However, he’s married to Rose (Carey Cox), who is pregnant with his baby. He is staying in New Bethlehem (a more liberal area of Gilead where women are allowed to read).
After June was hurt by a Gilead-led operation, Nick punched Lawrence at his and Naomi’s wedding. The Eyes take him to jail, where Rose tells Nick that she knows he’s in love with June and doesn’t want to be with him. Gilead isn’t known for taking people’s feelings into consideration, so don’t consider their marriage over yet.
The loose ends will be picked up in the sixth and final season premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale, which debuts Tuesday, April 8 on Hulu. The first three episodes will drop at once followed by weekly releases each Tuesday.
