Despite the sweltering afternoon heat with temperatures touching 37 degrees Celsius in Hyderabad, thousands of people gathered at the125-foot Ambedkar statue near NTR Gardens on Monday (April 14, 2025) to commemorate the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Blue flags fluttered in the air as chants of Jai Bhim echoed across the area, turning the occasion into a vibrant celebration of Ambedkar’s legacy.

What made this year’s Ambedkar Jayanti especially memorable for many was the rare opening of the memorial located beneath the towering 125-foot statue. The site, which has been largely inaccessible to the public for a considerable time, drew enthusiastic crowds eager to step inside. Visitors were seen taking photos and videos against the imposing backdrop, while many others rested on the grassy lawns within the premises, enjoying the moment.

Inside the memorial, visitors were greeted with a display of archival photographs of Dr. Ambedkar, which drew much attention. Groups of people continued to chant Jai Bhim even within the closed space, adding to the charged atmosphere. Several art installations inspired by the Constitution of India created by college students, were also exhibited further enriching the experience.

One striking highlight among the photo displays was a photograph of the honorary doctorate awarded to B.R. Ambedkar by Osmania University in 1953.

For Sai Charan, a 38-year-old resident of Banjara Hills, it was a trip down memory lane. “The last time I visited the memorial was two years ago during a performance by the Indian Navy band. Back then, there was no crowd, and I got a chance to see the memorial inside,” he said. This time, he brought along his college-going son to give him a glimpse of Ambedkar’s life and contributions. “I hope the government keeps the memorial open regularly. More people should get the opportunity to witness this space,” he added.
