With Ramzan, the Islamic month of fasting, on, restaurants in Tiruchi have lined up an array of options for the evening ‘iftar’ and pre-dawn ‘sahar’ meals to cater to a diverse customer base.

The entry of new eateries and greater exposure to global cuisine have added variety to the Ramzan menu in Tiruchi. Meals that were once restricted to home preparation can now be bought from restaurants.

“We pack over 4,000 parcels a day in our sahar menu from 2 a.m., in our branch on W.B. Road, which includes mutton biryani, curd rice, plantain, and dates at a set price of ₹150. Besides this, we have a steady demand for the Arab style ‘Mandi’ biryani prepared at our factory outlet in Sangliyandapuram,” a staff member of K.M.S. Hakkim Biryani Food and Catering Services told The Hindu.

Many restaurants have started offering buffet banquets for iftar and sahar, suitable for family outings.

At the Ammikal Restaurant, an iftar set meal of drinks, nonbu kanji, samosa, and dessert is available separately at ₹125 per head from 6 p.m. It is free when combined with the iftar dinner buffet of ₹399, which has a more elaborate spread of dishes throughout the week.

“We have a large number of customers from other communities too, who would like to try the dishes. The sahar meals, at ₹249 per head, are available from 1 a.m., and include biryani varieties, rasam, rice, and tea.,” said Ammikal Square operations manager J. Natarajan.

Takeaway orders are the mainstay for Topi Vaapa Biryani’s Ramzan menu. “Our customers are mainly professionals, colleges students, and travellers who are fasting. The sahar meal is available from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. while the iftar is served from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Besides this, we undertake bulk orders and serve walk-in customers,” said Sheikh Dawood, restaurant’s dining manager.
