Two girls studying in Class X drowned in a farmwell at Satupperi Palayam village near Arani town in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday after they slipped and fell into the well as they tried to peep into it.

The police said the deceased have been identified as M. Monisha, 15, and A. Sivaranjini, 14. They were students at Government Higher Secondary school in Thatchur near Arani town.

Initial inquiry revealed that after a joint study session for the Class X board examination, the girls were walking near the farmwell, which was owned by K. Jayavel, 52. Police said that as they were walking near the farmwell, which does not have a side wall, the girls slipped and fell into the 40-ft-deep well.

The girls cried out for help, but by the time farmers and other residents rushed to the spot, they had drowned.

Based on the alert, fire fighters from Arani retrieved their bodies from the well.

A case was registered by Kalampur police. An investigation is underway.
