To ‘respect public sentiments’, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday (March 31, 2025) announced change in the names of 18 places located in Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts.

Mr. Dhami, while issuing the guidelines for the name change, said the move was to respect public sentiment and to preserve Indian culture and heritage.

“The names are being changed so that people can take inspiration from the great men who contributed to Indian culture,” he added.

According to the State government, names of five places were changed in Haridwar district. Aurangzebpur in the Bhagwanpur block will now be known as Shivaji Nagar. Ghaziwali in the Bahadrabad block got new name as Arya Nagar and Chandpur in the same block will now be known as Jyotiba Phule Nagar. Mohammedpur Jaat and Khanpur Kursali in the Narsan block were renamed as Mohanpur Jaat and Ambedkar Nagar. Idirispur and Khanpur of the Khanpur block will now be known as Nandpur and Shree Krishnapur. Akbarpur Fazalpur in Roorkee will now be known as Vijay Nagar.

In the State capital Dehradun, Miyanwala is renamed as Ramjiwala, Peerwala will now be termed Kesri Nagar, Chandpur Khurd’s new name is Prithviraj Nagar and Abdulpur will be called as Daksh Nagar.

In Nainital, Nawabi Road has been renamed as Atal Marg while Panchakki to IIT road will be known as Guru Gowalkar Marg.

Udham Singh Nagar’s Sultanpur Patti Nagar Panchyat too got a new name as Kaushalyapuri.
